Superior Mercantile: Retail

Project Objective: This project consists of a renovation to a space in Albion, MI to function as a retail grab + go market.  Focus should be spent on the overall layout of the space; egress will be very important.  Research on equipment, markets of similar styles/function and accessibility while still keeping in mind the historical mission of the Albion Reinvestment Corporation.  In addition to design development/solution drawings, my partner and I will complete a full set of construction documents for the site.

Concept: Inspired by the Albion train station, Superior Mercantile will foster the development of local businesses by providing customers access to local products, just as the train station did in 1852. This small scale market and wine bar will incorporate contrasting rough, raw, and smooth textures with a neutral color scheme to provide a feeling of warmth. Repetition of horizontal lines will create a sense of stability while a variety of finishes will create visual interest through the use of patterns.

Researched Topics: Historic preservation, retail store layouts, lighting in retail stores, retail signage, interior codes, the city of Albion, Albion Reinvestment Corporation, and commercial grade furniture.
